A large U.S.–based credit union is undertaking a major data warehouse modernization initiative, and as part of this effort, is seeking a senior-level Ontology Architect / Knowledge Engineer to design and implement the organization’s canonical enterprise ontology. This role is central to the client’s digital transformation strategy, establishing the semantic foundation that will unify data definitions, improve interoperability across 14 systems, and support governance and analytics at scale.
As a technical and conceptual leader, you will partner with architects, data governance teams, and business stakeholders to ensure that key business concepts are consistently modeled, structured, and aligned across the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of an enterprise-wide ontology to unify business concepts and metadata.
- Design taxonomies, class hierarchies, and semantic relationships across key banking domains.
- Collaborate with data governance and data warehouse teams to ensure semantic alignment.
- Partner with subject matter experts to extract, formalize, and validate knowledge structures.
- Create and maintain ontology documentation using tools such as Protégé.
- Support integration of ontology models into warehouse layers, APIs, and query frameworks.
- Work with QA, platform teams, and analysts to validate and maintain semantic integrity.
- Assist in delivering internal training and adoption materials for ontology usage.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience with ontology modeling and semantic technologies.
- Proficiency in OWL, RDF, SPARQL, and relevant tooling (e.g., Protégé, GraphDB).
- Strong conceptual and data modeling background.
- Experience translating business concepts into structured ontologies or knowledge graphs.
- Excellent communication skills with technical and business stakeholders.
- English language proficiency.
Preferred Skills
- Experience within financial services or banking environments.
- Familiarity with the Scimitar core banking system (preferred).
- Background in metadata standards such as DCAT, SKOS, schema.org.
- Experience with knowledge graph implementations.
- Experience with SPLUNK, SQL, Python, and modern data warehouse tools.
- Cross-system and multi-vendor integration experience.
- Conceptual modeling and metadata governance expertise.
Work Arrangement
Remote, with occasional travel to Salt Lake City, Utah for key project milestones.
Location
U.S.-based candidates only, with travel to Utah as required.
