But the capability story is the easy part.
The Harder Question Nobody Has Answered Yet
Banks across the industry are deploying agentic AI systems that execute multistep financial workflows without a human sign-off at each step. The productivity numbers are compelling enough that boards are pushing for faster rollout. The problem is that the governance infrastructure has not kept pace with the deployment curve. No US regulator has issued specific guidance on who bears liability when an autonomous agent makes a consequential error. The existing model risk framework was built for a different era of AI entirely.
Meanwhile, one major bank outside the US has stepped into that vacuum with a public testing framework so detailed that peer institutions in other markets are now being benchmarked against it. Practitioner-built compliance roadmaps are filling the space that regulators have left open. And a landmark mid-market core banking deal closed this week that tells a different story than the Tier 1 headlines dominate.
The pattern emerging across governance, infrastructure, and talent this week is specific, and the implications for banks in active transformation are immediate.
